The Nvidia GeForce 6800 series has been around for quite a while now, and from the time they were top-of-the-line cards till now, it has been through many price drops to keep its price to performance ratio good enough for people to continue buying it. Is the 6800 still worth your money? Let’s find out!
Introduction
The Nvidia 6800 family has been around for quite a while, and has been changed from a top end graphics solution into a more mid-ranged and low cost gaming card.
However, having a piece of last season’s hottest card for a fraction of the price is very appealing. In the next few pages, you’ll find out how this ‘old bird’ stacks up against the newcomers.
This 6800 from inno3D also uses a new revision of the 68 core, having 12 pipelines and being PCI-E based (look ma, no bridge chip!) The core, codenamed NV42, is built using a 110nm process, and should be more efficient than the old one.
Does the new core make up for the lack of pipelines? Is it still worth buying a 68 series card? Is it going to last, or is it just a way for Nvidia to sell outdated chips?
Card Information
As shown in the rivatuner screenshot below, the card has 12 pipes, and is clocked at 325mhz on the core, and 700mhz on the memory. The NV42 is also a 12 pipe core by nature, and cannot be unlocked like the old core. There aren’t any ‘masked’ pipelines present in rivatuner either.
