Donanimhaber reports that the AMD Mobility Radeon HD 6000 series will be headed by a GPU codenamed Blackcomb. Of course, Blackcomb will be based on a desktop chip, presumably either Barts or Cayman. For the Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series, AMD skipped the Cypress GPU completely, with the top Mobility Radeon HD 5870 being mainstream Juniper, featuring 800 SP and 128-bit memory. Blackcomb, however, will feature a 256-bit memory interface, and the number of functional units are expected to increase dramatically.

This doesn't necessarily mean Blackcomb will be similar to top GPU chip Cayman, and may still be based on Barts. However, Barts, which will power the Radeon HD 6700 series, is rumoured to be feature a 256-bit interface, and close the gap between x700 and x800 series products. Thus, we can expect Barts to be much closer to Cayman than Juniper was to Cypress.

The end result for the Mobility Radeon HD 6000 series is dramatic increases in specifications across the board. However, since power is always the limiting factor for notebook GPUs, we don't expect these new products to be clocked quite as high as the Mobility Radeon HD 5870. Still, there will no doubt be a considerable progress in performance. It will also feature UVD3 and Eyefinity. NVIDIA has been heavily pushing its Optimus and 3D Vision features for the newly announced GeForce 400M products, and AMD may reply with its own competing technologies.
