Following the release of the quite insane mobile GPU, Nvidia Geforce GTX 480M, Fudzilla reports that Nvidia is preparing a more sensible laptop GPU based on GF104. To be branded Geforce GTX 460M, it is expected to feature similar specs to the Geforce GTX 460. However, the main improvement will be in the ridiculous 100W TDP of the 480M. As a reminder, the 480M is a heavily downlocked version of the desktop GTX 465, which itself consumes 200+W. The rumoured TDP of the desktop GTX 460 is about 150W, a lot lower than GTX 465, despite close performance. So with some serious downclocking/overvolting, we can hope the GF104M part can reach a more sensible TDP like 50W.

The current AMD flagship is the Mobility Radeon HD 5870, which is actually based on the Juniper 800 SP chip. Of course, it is possible that AMD releases a 1600 SP Cypress based Mobility HD 5970 product, to counter the release of Nvidia's GTX 400M products. With Southern Islands looming, it is more likely that this generation will not see a x9xx product.

It is clear that along with significant performance/watt leadership, notebook graphics leadership follows - and this is reflected by the AMD's rising market share in the notebook arena. However, Nvidia's Optimus has received a number of design wins, and AMD is looking to release a suitable alternative. Of course, AMD has had switchable graphics for years now, but it isn't automatic like Nvidia's hyped solution.
