[Rumour] Nvidia preparing dual-GF104 card

It is not a new rumour, but Fudzilla is re-iterating that Nvidia is preparing a dual-GPU card based on its upcoming chip, GF104. Recent rumours suggest that GF104, on which the GTX 460 is based, is a 240/256 SP, 192-bit chip. The top end GF104 ends up at a TDP of 180W, making a dual-GPU version feasible. However, we have to question the purpose of such a product.

It is not a new rumour, but Fudzilla is re-iterating that Nvidia is
preparing a dual-GPU card based on its upcoming chip, GF104. Recent
rumours
suggest that GF104, on which the GTX 460 is based, is a 240/256
SP, 192-bit chip. The top end GF104 ends up at a TDP of 180W, making a
dual-GPU version feasible. However, we have to question the purpose of
such a product.

A dual-GF104 then sounds much like a GTX 295. Of course, we can expect a dual-GF104 to end up quicker than a GTX 295, but how much so? Logic would suggest that a dual-GF104 could possibly outperform the GTX 480, but it is a massive gap to be closed down to the HD 5970. It remains unlikely that a dual GTX 460 product (with the required downclock to fit 300W) will get anywhere close to taking the performance crown for Nvidia.

It is quite possible that in the tradition of dodgy nomenclature, the GTX 460 does end up being faster than the GTX 465. In this case, a dual-GF104 will act as a decent stopgap between the GTX 480 and the HD 5970, or where the HD 5950 could have been. However, logic suggests that a dual-GF104 is likely to be barely faster than a GTX 480.

The other question is – Can Nvidia prepare this dual-GF104 card before ATI releases its next generation Southern Islands products?

We will be following GF104 and its possible dual-GF104 variant closely. Given the current information, the requirement for a dual-GF104 card remains questionable. This is unless Nvidia pulls off a major miracle with the GF104.
