We’ve all seen the G80 cores dressed over with their decent Heat-Spreaders. Now see them naked and sexy!

LANParty can get terribly boring if you don’t play enough games. Then again, there is nothing which can’t pop out of our minds with a PC in reach. Us bunch of bored LANPartyers decided to stay up and laze around in the wee hours of the morning. In the VR junkpile, we found the victim of pre-LANParty’s extreme chillout; the NVIDIA 8800GTX which suffered a fatal bite from the dryice we fed it.

Well, what good can be a bunch of sadistic, restless g33ks be up to? With a random tool we put some almighty g33k-force upon the Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS) of the helpless 8800GTX.

WHAM! BAM! WATAH!!!

Poof! Pardon our refusal to let the poor piece of hardware rest-in-peace amongst its fallen comrades. But for thermal management freaks out there, this should be quite a turn-on.

NVIDIA has been boasting about the complexity of its GPU design with transistor-count figures. Now you see what happens when you use so many unified shader processors without a die-shrink.

Check out the IHS! Luckily the die ain’t bonded to the IHS, and it did not suffer the fate of our previous LGA CPUs.

If you bothered to take a closer look, you may have noticed that the layer of thermal interface material is clearly visible. The IHS appears to be fixed with minimal mounting pressure. By removing this weak link, heat dissipation can be very much improved. I can imagine how much cooler the IHS-less GPU could possibly be.

The IHS profile consists of a indented nickel-plated copper plate. There is little space for a razor blade to enter into epoxy, so steady hands are a must for such a risky operation.

The other issues that could possibly arise involves cutting off the miniature SMD capacitors lined-up along the GPU. The proximity of these pinhead sized devices to the epoxy means that the likelihood of chipping off a few of the capacitors is higher.
