3D graphics pioneer John Carmack joins Oculus VR as Chief Technology Officer
The legendary game programmer has been hired by Oculus VR – the startup working on virtual reality head-mounted display Oculus Rift – as CTO.
The news comes directly from Oculus VR’s official blog where CEO Palmer Luckey welcomes Carmack to their small team of brilliant computer scientists and engineers.
John Carmack has been an avid supporter of Oculus Rift for a long time. He has actually been deeply involved in the project even before it gained popularity from their successful Kickstarter campaign, being the first outside developer to integrate the Oculus Rift tech into a game without help of a properly developed SDK.
Carmack will still continue his role as lead programmer at the influential game development company he founded – id Software of Doom, Wolfenstein and Quake fame – but his primary priority will be working on Oculus Rift.
My time division is now Oculus over Id over Armadillo. Busy busy busy!
