11 ABIT KV8 MAX3 Board Review

Introduction:

When the Athlon 64 was first introduced, the boards coupled
with it at launch lacked many of the features computer enthusiasts look for
in their motherboards. These features include a thorough BIOS, in depth voltage
tweaking, and of course good overclockability. Companies like ASUS, FIC, MSI,
and others put out motherboards that were of good quality, but did not have
the sort of features and overclockability AMD fans remember with motherboards
like the ABIT NF7-S Rev 2.0 and ASUS A7N8X Deluxe. The lack of these enthusiast
friendly motherboards has steered many high end users away from the Athlon
64 platform, that is, until recently. A few months ago ABIT introduced its
new KV8-MAX3 motherboard, one that they said would put all other Athlon 64
boards to shame. Coupled with ABIT’s OTES (Outside Thermal Exhaust System)
and µGuru technology, the KV8-MAX3 boasts more features than any Socket
754 motherboard on the market.

Based on the VIA K8T800 chipset, the KV8-MAX3 the latest in
ABIT’s popular line of MAX motherboards. The KV8-MAX3 features six SATA ports,
two from the VIA VT8237 Southbridge and four from the Silicon Image onboard
RAID controller. Also included are three IEEE 1394a ports, 8 USB 2.0 ports,
Gigabit Ethernet, and S/PDIF optical input and output ports. The board’s PCB
is filled to the brink and if it would be possible for ABIT to include any
more features in the KV8-MAX3, I’m sure they would. But enthusiasts do not
buy motherboards solely on features, how does this board perform and overclock?
Let’s take a closer look…

The ABIT KV8-MAX3 is a motherboard catered for the enthusiast
market, and therefore comes bundled with many items not seen with most standard
motherboards. The KV8-MAX3 includes two rounded IDE cables, one 80 wire ATA
133 and one Floppy cable. Also included are four SATA cables, a great and
very comprehensive manual and quick installation guide, and ABIT’s own Secure
IDE. Secure IDE is a encryption card that uses the eNOVA X-Wall chipset that
ensures confidentiality and privacy of your data through disk encryption.
Most people will probably not use Secure IDE, but it is a nice addition to
the board’s bundle and a good way to diversify the KV8-MAX3 from other K8T800
boards in the market.
