There’s no arguing that Bungie’s upcoming MMORPG/FPS infusion Destiny is ambitious, but Activision CEO Bobby Kotick predicts that the game will be the company’s next big hit.
With Destiny, Bungie is finely tuning one of the major releases of the year, especially on next-gen consoles. The game blends some of the studio’s most familiar territory–the mastery of sci-fi FPS action–with the whole new frontier of the MMORPG realm, making it a curious and quite alluring title for new and old consoles alike.
Activision, the powerhouse publisher behind Bungie’s new title, has praised the game at every opportunity–and it has also stirred up the gaming sphere. After the juggernaut of Call of Duty: Ghosts and the ever-popular Skylanders series, Activision is betting on Destiny being their next big hit for the console market. How big? Billion-dollar big.
During the financial call for Q4 2013, Activision/Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick affirmed his confidence that Destiny will be a console titan.
“We expect Bungie’s Destiny, an innovative shared-world, first-person action game to be Activision Publishing’s next billion dollar franchise.”
Kotick also went on to report that Activision’s 2014 catalog is quite formidable. This year’s projected releases include a myriad of games from high-profile franchises, including new entrants in the Skylanders and Call of Duty series. We’ll also see Activision enter the free-to-play sector as well with Hearthstone (a digital trading-card game that’s seen quite a bit of play) and Call of Duty Online.
“As we look to 2014 and beyond, we have the strongest and most diverse pipeline of games in our history.
“…Activision Publishing also has terrific new games planned for the Call of Duty® and Skylanders™ franchises, and Blizzard Entertainment has an expansion to the top-selling PC and console game Diablo® III and another major new release.
“Also in our pipeline for 2014 and the next few years are at least three potentially groundbreaking new free-to-play franchises—Blizzard’s Hearthstone™: Heroes of Warcraft™ and Heroes of the Storm™, and Activision Publishing’s Call of Duty Online.”
Some other interesting tidbits in the earnings call revealed that the toy-based Skylanders Giant franchise has amassed a staggering $2 billion in total global sales, heading up the competition against Disney’s similar toy-and-game lineup with Infinity.

Diablo III has also seen a boost in performance, raising up to 15 million total units across both console and PC platforms, making a climb of a million sales in a few months.
The financials prove that Activision is still going strong, and although they’ve invested quite a bit into Destiny, the company will have a multitude of other franchises to fall back on if somehow Bungie’s new shooter should flop–but we don’t think that’s likely.
It’ll be interesting to see how the game fares when it releases later this year, but given the worldwide acclaim Bungie earned with Halo, it’s fair to say that it will at least be met with global anticipation. Given the impressive screenshots and footage on the game mechanics, Destiny looks to be a monumental release to say the least.
