Adobe has launched Photoshop Touch for the iPad 2, offering the core features of its popular Photoship image editing software, along with custom-built creative and sharing capabilities just for tablet computers.

Adobe made the announcement at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where it shared how iPad users can edit pictures and apply professional effects to them without needing a desktop or laptop computer.

Since it's a touch-based application there are some potential difficulties in getting the level of precision needed for creating and editing photos and artwork, but Adobe has adapted its technology with things like the Scribble Selection Tool for easy extraction of image objects, and Refine Edge to help cope with hard-to-select areas with soft edges.

Photoshop Touch also helps users find images on Google Image Search, and users can share edited photos directly to Facebook.

“People will be amazed with what they can create on the iPad using Photoshop Touch,” said David Wadhwani, SVP and GM of the Digital Media Business Unit at Adobe. “Photoshop Touch combines the magic of Photoshop and its core features with the convenience of a tablet, bringing image-editing power to the fingertips of millions of people.”

Adobe is planning a number of other apps for the iPad in the coming months, including Adobe Collage for moodboards, Adobe Debut for presenting and reviewing creative work, Adobe Ideas for sketching, Adobe Kuler for colour themes, and Adobe Proto for making website and mobile app prototypes.
