Akitio announced its newest enclosure for 2.5-inch SATA hard drives and solid state drives, the Neutrino U3+. The enclosure features an all-aluminum body that doubles up as a heatsink, and a combination of USB 3.0 and FireWire 800 interfaces. The enclosure is designed for desks, not exactly pockets.

The Neutrino U3+ provides fast interface options for both Mac and PC users, with FireWire 800 (FireWire 400 backwards-compatible), and USB 3.0 (USB 2.0 backwards-compatible). The enclosure draws power from an external power adapter, if connected to the host by FireWire. It can enclosure HDDs and SSDs in the 2.5-inch SATA form-factor, with up to 12.5 mm thickness (which is standard). Its controller supports drives with capacities up to 1 TB.

Its rear panel consists of a USB 3.0 micro type-B connector, a pair of FireWire 800 connectors (can daisy-chain), DC power input, and a hard power switch. The body is mostly made of a thick sheet of aluminum, the bottom portion of which is ridged, where heat dissipation takes place. The enclosure, thus is completely fan-less. The body doubles up as the drive's heatsink. It is also designed to be stackable with other enclosures of its kind.

Available soon, the Neutrino U3+ from Akitio will be priced at US $79.
