An amazing new gel presents a possible revolution to on-site medical assistance, as it is able to seal even large lacerations almost immediately. Video inside!
NYU student Joe Landolina has created a medical miracle, and if the video below is to be believed, it can revolutionize on the fly medical assistance to victims of open and bleeding wounds. His invention is a Veti-Gel, a medical gel created from plant polymers, which seals up any wounds almost immediately, successfully clotting the wound in the process, and then leaves a skin-like stretchy surface that helps in the healing process.
Landolina has explained that the gel has three main functions: First, its a tissue adhesive that clings to wounds and seals them up almost immediately, even under the pressure of gushing blood. Thus, there is no need to even put pressure on the wound, unlike what you'd do with conventional bandages.
Secondly, the gel activates "Factor 12" on contact with blood. Factor 12 activates fibrin, the stringy webbing which creates blood clots by catching platelets and using them to block the flow of blood. On the title image for this article, you can see those strings clearly.
Finally, the gel activates the platelet cells which causes them to bind to the fibrin, completing the seal.
"The gel basically [mimics] what the human body does but at a much faster rate," Landolina explains, further stating that the military is interested in adopting the technology and that clinical testing will begin at around the same time as its released to the military; roughly one and a half years from now.
