Amazon's latest Kindle devices, the Paperwhite and Paperwhite 3G, have begun shipping today, bringing the online book store's most advanced e-reader to customers around the world.

The Kindle Paperwhite includes a slew of new features for an improved electronic reading experience, including an improved display with 62 percent more pixels and 25 percent higher contrast, the latter of which is significant, given the previous dull and greyish tones of previous Kindles.

Amazon has also added new patented lighting technology that shines light from above the display, rather than using the traditional back-lit displays we are used to. This means light is not shone out into the user's eyes, resulting in less screen fatigue, a criticism of e-readers in the past.

Since physical books don't have to worry about shutting down due to power loss, battery life is important for e-readers. Amazon is touting the Paperwhite as having a battery life of up to eight weeks at standard settings. The sooner we get the equivalent for smartphones and tablet computers, the better.

Other features include a revamped user interface, a Time to Read feature that provides an estimate of how long it will take for a given book to be read, and free Wi-Fi or free 3G for the more expensive model.

“Kindle Paperwhite is the most advanced e-reader ever created and the Kindle we always wanted to build,” said Jay Marine, VP of Amazon Kindle. “Pre-orders have far exceeded our expectations and we’re excited to start shipping Kindle Paperwhite to customers today.”
