Amazon has been rumored to get into the smartphone race for quite some time now. They already laid the groundwork a while back with their somewhat controversial (albeit a bit expected) move where they forked their own version of Android which included their own app store, essentially cutting Google out of the picture.

It looks like the wait might almost be over if The Wall Street Journal’s report is accurate.  They say they have sources which claim that Amazon has been working on a wide array of gadgets which include not only one smartphone, but two, along with other things like an audio-only streaming device of some sort. They also suggest that one of the two smartphones being worked on will have a 3D display.

WSJ says that the display will be “Using retina-tracking technology, images on the smartphone would seem to float above the screen like a hologram and appear three-dimensional at all angles, they said. Users may be able to navigate through content using just their eyes”, according to both of their sources.

There is no confirmed release date for any of these devices but it’s no surprise that Amazon continues to be interested in the hardware market considering their first foray into tablets with the Kindle Fire did not disappoint. Only time will tell whether or not there is room for another big player in the smartphone market, or whether Amazon’s phone is destined to be a niche consumer device. One thing is for sure, they do have a lot of leverage to win over customers considering the significant amount of content they have access to.
