AMD CEO: Second-generation DX11 GPUs in 2010

Follow a flurry of news and rumours relating to ATI's next generation product, AMD's CEO Dirk Meyer has confirmed that AMD GPG is planning to release the second DX11 generation of ATI GPUs in 2010. "We will start introducing the second-generation of our DX 11 products before the end of the year," said Mr. Meyer at the Q2 financial conference call.

Widely reported to be codenamed Southern Islands and branded Radeon HD 6000, ATI's next generation will be fabricated at TSMC 40nm, the same as the HD 5000 series. We can expect the release schedule to be similar, with the first S. Islands cards releasing in Q4, and the derivatives continue to release in 2011.
AMD posted strong Q2 2010 financials, bolstered by impressive demand for the Radeon HD 5000 series. Having sold 16 million DX11 cards to date, AMD GPG posted revenues of $470 million with an operating income of $33 million. In fact, AMD's sales were constrained by limited supply. AMD expect ATI GPU demands to remain strong, and easing supply constraints.
