AMD launches two Llano Athlon II X4 CPUs

AMD has quietly rolled out two more Athlon II X4 CPUs for Socket FM1. These FM1 Athlon II X4s are nothing but harvested Llano dies with the GPU part disabled. The new SKUs – Athlon II X4 638 and 641 – will close the gap between the current FM1 Athlons – Athlon II X4 631 and 651.

The Athlon II X4 641 features 4 cores clocked at 2.8 GHz, 0.2 GHz lower than the 651. The TDP for the 641 is also 100W. The official price for the Athlon II X4 641 is $81, which makes it an excellent bargain choice. In comparison, the now EOLed AM3+ Athlon II X4 640 retailed at $99. Current pre-order prices are in the $90-$95 range, but we can expect it to fall under $90 once supply/demand stabilizes.

The second new Athlon is the Athlon II X4 638. The 638 is clocked just 0.1 GHz less than the 641 at 2.7 GHz, but fits in under the 65W TDP.  This makes it AMD's fastest 65W desktop CPU. The 638 is also priced at $81, so the choice between 638 and 641 revolves around 100 MHz or 65W TDP. Looking forward, Trinity and Socket FM2 are introduced in Q2 2012, so these may well be the last CPUs launched for the FM1 platform. Whether the Trinity line-up will also feature GPU-less Athlons remains to be seen.
