07 AMD said to be providing GPU for the PlayStation 4

An article over at Forbes suggests that Sony is looking to drop NVIDIA in favour of AMD as the GPU of choice in its next-gen PlayStation 4 gaming console. A former AMD employee has apparently come forward and revealed that AMD is involved in development on a new Sony system.

Commenting further, he said that CEO Rory Read who was appointed back in August 2011 has been charged with making "sure AMD doesn’t screw up its slate of new products—which includes a hush-hush effort to put its graphics chips in Sony’s still-unannounced new game console—and shake off the once scrappy company’s years-long funk."

Until now we had no real substance whatsoever that Sony was actively working on a new console, so that is an obvious point of interest in the case of Forbes' article. Rumour is now circulating that it will reveal elements of its next-generation system to the masses during the E3 Expo in June.

If the rumour of choosing to go with an AMD GPU on the PS4 turns out to be true and the console launches soon enough, it would mean all three major game console makers (including Microsoft and Nintendo) would have AMD-made GPUs.
