AMD's new Radeon HD 8900M series of graphics nearly doubles performance over the earlier launched HD 8800M laptop graphics chips, comes packed in the new MSI GX70 gaming notebook.

Back in January, AMD unveiled their first Radeon HD 8000M series of graphics cards tailored for laptops. Back then, the highest end offering was the HD 8800M series with 640 Stream Processors and based on the latest GCN architecture. Fast forward to May and AMD has finally unveiled their highest end HD 8900M series, which nearly doubles the specifications on almost all fronts.

The new HD 8900M series brings the same "Boost" feature that updated high-end Radeon HD 7000 desktop models enjoy. While doubling the Stream Processors count, AMD also kicked up the Compute Power of the new chip to nearly 2.5x times than it's younger sibling. Memory is connected across a 256-bit interface with GDDR5 RAM clocked at 1.2 GHz (Quad Data Rate being 4.8 GHz). The HD 8970M can easily power a 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) resolution display and, given enough ports, can drive as many as 6 displays.

AMD's internal benchmarks pits their new product anywhere between 12% to 54% faster than nVidia's flagship GTX 680M GPU.

Thankfully you won't have to wait for months to see an actual device using this product, as MSI is launching their latest gaming laptop with Radeon HD 8900M GPU inside. Dubbed the MSI GX70, this 17.3 inch successor to the GX60 packs AMD's (unspecified) Richland A10 APU, Killer Networking card and SteelSeries Keyboard (for the best possible portable gaming experience).

MSI has priced the base model of their GX70 gaming laptop at just $1100, and this one comes wth the new HD 8900M GPU inside. Quite a bargain if you think about it, especially considering this laptop can act as a full desktop replacement to give you an on-the-go gaming experience (as a demo showed the product powering Crysis 3 on one display while powering 2D on two others).
