AMD: Zambezi will launch in Q4

Reported by on Thursday, September 8 2011 6:08 pm

AMD finally shipped the first Bulldozer CPUs yesterday, in Interlagos form. Interlagos is a server only CPU which combines two 4-module Bulldozer dies in MCM to make the first 16-core CPU. In a blog post celebrating the same, AMD's Director of Product Marketing (for server/workstation/embedded products) John Fruehe shed some light on the client/desktop version in the comments section. Mr. Fruehe commented, "Interlagos is a server part, there is no desktop variant. The client version of Bulldozer is Zambezi and it will launch in Q4."

Scheduled for "2011" for a long period, Zambezi was first expected to release in June, with the FX branding officially announced (in fact, the AMD FX website has been live for over 3 months - unheard of for unreleased products). In May, Zambezi / FX Series was pushed back to Q3, with the rumour mill constantly pointing at September. Now, FX Series has slipped to Q4 2011, most likely October. Incidentally, Intel has also pulled in Sandy Bridge-E to Q4, setting up yet another Intel vs AMD showdown.
