Michael Pachter puts forwards his predictions for the next console price war.
Last week we took a look at the world pricing guide for next-gen consoles and today, we have Michael Pachter – renowned games analyst – predicting the launch prices for the Xbox One and PS4. Talking with GamesIndustry.Biz, Pachter stated via a research note from Wedbush Morgan, the PS4 will cost $275 and the Xbox One $325 for just the hardware alone. These costs were based on previously released official specs and Pachter hopefully added in possible shipping costs per console.
Pachter’s words could easily create more buzz around the consoles, especially with E3 only a week away. He also added on launch, the PS4 will cost $349, while the Xbox One will be $399. This may come as a shock to Playstation and Xbox fans alike due to the pricing of Sony’s previous consoles. Pachter added Microsoft could easily subsidize the price for the Xbox One via an Xbox Live contract or subscription. This has been rumoured in the past with a subscription service being teased with a cheaper or on loan console.
He also added the possibility of both current generation consoles, the Xbox 360 and PS3 respectively, could be lowered by $50 each before the year is through. This would include the Wii being cut down to only $99, despite Nintendo already releasing a current gen console. The price drops could be an incredible business strategy to lure consumers into their next console by showing off what they have already. I know personally having missed out on owning a 360 this generation, I’d love to check it out before making a proper decision on owning Microsoft’s next console.
