Introduction

AMD Athlon 64 processor is out on the market for
quite some time now and there are a number of board offerings for consumers to
choose. VIA, SiS, NVIDIA and ALi all have their chipsets available for Athlon 64
and even a wider choice of brands and models. However, shortage of Athlon 64
processors and steep pricing initially have limited the its demand but situation
has been easing quite a bit now with more Athlon 64 chips around, price cuts and
a much cheaper Athlon 64 3000+ with 512KB of L2 cache out in the market. Right
now, all the Athlon 64 processors out there are 754-pin and there are a whole
bunch of consumers waiting for a cheaper and faster Athlon 64 on 939-pin
supporting Dual Channel memory and 512KB L2 cache. AMD is touted to released
939-pin Athlon 64 in the next quarter based on the "Newcastle" core and
excitement will get heated up by then as consumers will be deciding between
Athlon 64 "Newcastle" or a Pentium 4 "Prescott".

AOpen is always in the forefront in delivering
new boards based on the latest technology especially in their Intel boards
offering. Although this time AOpen lags a little behind other board manufacturer in bringing
an Athlon 64 board out in the market but nonetheless they have their AK89 Max
board out now which we will be looking at today. AOpen AK89 Max
