Box AOpen AX4SG Max II Prescott Ready Review

Introduction

Intel has unveiled their first 90nm desktop processor based on
the Prescott core last month with speeds from 2.8 to 3.4Ghz. Prescott is packed
with larger L1 and L2 cache of 16KB and 1MB respectively, 31-stages pipelines 13
new Prescott instructions, SSE3 and improved HT technology. Although Intel 875P
and 865PE/G chipsets can support Prescott, not all manufacturers dare to claim
their boards Prescott ready as it require higher power consumption which might
require some power circuitry rework. Users should look out for "Prescott Ready"
motherboards claimed by the manufacturers to ensure full compatibility but
sometimes it is not as simple as it claims. In simple term, a "Prescott Ready"
board should have a 4 Phase power design and some other enhancements to keep
components temperature down.

AOpen is a company who always place stability as their top
priority and often their boards are just built for that purpose. AOpen usually
has many models to a particular chipset. For example, they have

13 different models
to date for just 865G chipset serving different needs of
their customers. AX4SG Max II is the latest board from AOpen based on the Intel
865G chipset officially supporting Prescott. It comes in a cool blue box and a
comprehensive package content. The board sports a classic glossy black 6-layer
PCB and features support for Dual Channel DDR400, Intel Extreme Graphics 2,
IEEE1394, 7.1 Channel Audio with S/PDIF IN/OUT through a special EX_Sound audio
module, 6 x Serial ATA 150 ports with RAID functionality, Intel Gigabit LAN with
CSA, Die Hard BIOS, Self Powered PCI slot and 6 USB 2.0 ports. AOpen R&D Team
also develop some useful and unique features such as Open Jukebox Player, Dr.
Voice II, Ez Restore, Ez WinFlash, Ez Clock, SilenTek, Vivid BIOS, Win BIOS etc.
There are some other cool enhancements made to the board for additional
stability and we will go in detailed their board features, BIOS features,
performance as well as their overclockability.
