With the iPhone 4S being introduced to the world on October 4, 2011 and its follow-up, the iPhone 5, seeing daylight September 12, 2012, it was always fairly predictable Apple will be looking to throw a new smartphone in the ring no sooner than August 2013 and no later than October.
But now we can finally narrow that down. To a single date: September 10. That’s at least according to AllThingsD, the website that quotes anonymous and therefore suspicious sources. Only it’s very rare the site goes out on such a limb for a rumor, so chances are the intel is verified and deemed credible.
The timing of this expected Apple press event, although not so shocking, is at least a little bit intriguing. Why? Mainly because IFA 2013, seen by many as the biggest tech event left this year, will take place between September 6 and 11.
True, everybody who’s somebody and will have a booth in Berlin will look to steal the early spotlight and so there probably won’t be any major unveilings left for September 9, 10 or 11. But Apple’s event is still dangerously close to Samsung’s next Unpacked episode or the highly anticipated Sony Honami intro.
Long story short, all that makes me think Apple has a few extra aces up its sleeve than the last few years. Specifically, we could be seeing both the high-end iPhone 5S (5G?) and the lower-end, lower-cost 5C going official 29 days from now.
As for iPads, I’m not ready to rule out seeing one or two new models also being introduced, although historically speaking Apple has always liked to keep their unveilings separate of iPhone intros. Which means we’re in for something special come late October or early November as well.
All in all, be sure to mark your calendars for September 10 and don’t go throwing yourselves at the LG G2, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 or Sony Honami before checking out the iPhone 5S and 5C in the flesh too.
