Apple To Ship Snow Leopard in September, Upgrade for US$29

(Engadget Japan) Apple is getting all ready for its next update on the Mac OS, the upcoming 10.6 "Snow Leopard" will be set to ship in September this year. An upgrade option is available for a mere US$29 for existing Leopard users. Read on to find out more.

Apple To Ship Snow Leopard in September, Upgrade for US$29

(Engadget Japan) Apple is getting all ready for its next update on the Mac OS, the upcoming 10.6 "Snow Leopard" will be set to ship in September this year. An upgrade option is available for a mere US$29 for existing Leopard users.

Showing off yet again this year's WWDC, Apple has given the developers and users some interesting updates on "Snow Leopard" :

  • All core apps are 64-bit, and various performance improvements abound. Mail boasts 85% faster message loads and 90% faster loads, while Time Machine has a 50% faster initial backup
  • Safari 4 will be introduced to Leopard, Tiger and Windows users but Snow Leopard users will have an additional "Crash Resistance" which keeps browser and tabs intact even if a plugin crashes -- user just refreshes the page. 64-bit version will also be able to execute  JavaScript 50% faster.
  • Icon size of the Dock has been increased to support resolutions of 512x512
  • QuickTime X supports HTTP streaming and a new look. Users can record and trim video, and upload to sharing sites like MobileMe and YouTube
  • Built-in Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 support in the OS, including Mail, Calendar and Address Book syncing
  • New trackpads will be able to handle handwriting recognition , and there's new text selection "AI." There's also support for wireless Braille accessories
