Apple announced yesterday that it will finally release iOS 7 to the public next week. According to a new report, Apple’s set-top box will also receive a major software update in the coming week, on September 18 to be precise.
It was rumored prior to Apple’s September 10 media event that the company might make an Apple TV related announcement. There were also rumored of a refreshed set-top box being released. None of that happened, Apple didn’t even talk about the device during the event. Citing people familiar with the matter, AllThingsD reports today that the Apple TV will receive a major software update next week.
Not much is known about the features this new update is expected to bring right now. Apparently the Apple TV’s AirPlay feature will be tweaked in the update, there have been rumors about the AirPlay feature being enhanced. It is expected that the update will enable users to play content they’ve purchased from iTunes on other people’s Apple TVs. Right now customers first need to download content from iTunes on their iOS or Mac device and then beam it to the Apple TV via AirPlay.
Apple didn’t mention anything about an Apple TV software update during the event, so it can’t be said for sure if the update will definitely come out next week. All we can do right now is wait and watch what happens.
