Benchmarking Setup & Information

The following testbed was used to benchmark the ASUS DRW-1612BL:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+
DFI Lanparty UT nF4 Ultra-D
2x512MB PC3200 (400Mhz) DDR-SDRAM
Nvidia GeForce 6600GT
Hitachi 7K250 80GB SATA

The ASUS DRW-1612BL Firmware 1.06 was compared with the BENQ DW1620 Pro Firmware B7V9. The Nero InfoTool screenshot of the DRW-1612BL’s features is shown below, note that it seems to have detected the read speed incorrectly.

Nero CD/DVD Speed 4.7.0.0 was used for benchmarking.

The media used was Verbatim DVD+R 4.7GB 16x LightScribe 1.2. The details of the media are:

DVD Read Speed Testing

The DRW-1612BL performs well enough here, rounding off at 12.19x with an average of 9.12x.
(Take note that the DW1620 Pro is known for its inferior read speed compared to most drives.)

Seek Times Testing

The seek times of the DRW-1612BL are slightly high but still acceptable.

CPU Usage Testing

The results for the CPU Usage test were unusually high for both drives. We will be updating the results as soon as we can diagnose and fix the problem.
