After an exhausting and relatively unproductive week at Computex Taipei, I wanted to unwind by putting the latest AMD APU under sub-zero cooling to see how much overclocking headroom I could extract out of the chip and at the same time, do a write-up on our motherboard review candidate – the Asus F2A85-V Pro.

The Asus F2A85-V Pro is not a newly released product, but rather one of the motherboards that was launched with last year’s AMD Trinity APU, based on the A85X FCH (diagram below) and Socket FM2 architecture. It is also one of the recommended test beds by The_Stilt, probably the most famous and helpful member in the AMD extreme OC community, because of its properly implemented UEFI routines and low-level voltage control for unlocking the potential of the platform.

From the back I/O, we see that onboard display has been given a high priority, with no less than a full complement of outputs (HDMI, DP, DVI-D and analog D-Sub) present. Other than that, there is a PS/2 header, eSATA 6Gb/s and the usual assortment of USB (four 3.0 and two 2.0), 7.1 channel audio and RJ45 Gigabit LAN port.

Being Asus’ flag bearer and generally the most expensive motherboard for the FM2 APU platform, we were a tad disappointed to see the use of bog standard Realtek 8111F LAN and ALC892 audio instead of the more sophisticated stuff used on their recent Intel motherboards. I guess this just proves the popular notion that motherboard makers tend to pay more attention/try harder on their Intel offerings, with the exception of a small handful of boards like the ROG Crosshair V Formula-Z (AM3+).
