Asus inadvertently confirms new Fonepad 7, coming with faster CPU and 5 MP cam
Although the upgraded version of the Fonepad has stopped being a secret ages ago, Asus seems keen to keep a tight lid on it for a while longer. Probably until the new Transformer Pad, PadFone mini, MeMoFone HD 5 and MeMoPad HD 8 will themselves become official, which should happen any day now.
The thing is the upgraded Fonepad 7 is not willing to be kept under lock and key anymore and you can’t fight such a feisty phone/tablet hybrid. Case in point, it appears a TV commercial for it has somehow surfaced on Asus’ official YouTube channel earlier today, only to be deleted soon after.
Fortunately, we’ve still got the video, courtesy of another YT account, so you can consider the device as good as official. Oddly, Asus calls it simply the “Fonepad 7”, which is bound to stir up some confusion. Then again, maybe it’s planned to only hit markets where the first-gen gadget is not available. Who knows?
What we do know and is much more important is the refresher to what may become an unlikely franchise packs a bumped-up 1.6 GHz Intel processor (most likely an Atom Z2560, aka Clover Trail+), as well as a 5 MP rear-facing camera with F2.4 aperture and Full HD video recording.
Not bad, albeit all the rest seems to be the same as before. Namely, the 7-inch tab with voice call support will rock a 1,280 x 800 pix res IPS LCD screen, 1 GB RAM, 16 GB of on-board storage, microSD card slot, all of which are identical to its predecessor’s features.
What still remains to be seen is whether the 4,270 mAh battery will get some sort of size boost and if there will be pre-loaded Android 4.1, 4.2 or 4.3 Jelly Bean. All in due time, right?
