Resident overclocker at Asus, Marcus “Kinc” Hultin and his Swedish compatriot and fellow master overclocker Jon “Elmor” Sandstrom, have pushed a graphics card past the magical 1500 Mhz barrier for the first time. The card in question is an Asus ROG Matrix HD 5870 2GB.

The duo managed to overclock it from the default clock of 894 MHz to an incredible 1525 MHz. The RAM was overclocked to just 1300 MHz though.

Resident overclocker at Asus, Marcus “Kinc” Hultin and his Swedish
compatriot and fellow master overclocker Jon “Emor” Sandstrom, have
pushed a graphics card past the magical 1500 Mhz barrier for the first
time. The card in question is an Asus ROG Matrix HD 5870 2GB.

The duo managed to overclock it from the default clock of 894 MHz to an
incredible 1525 MHz. The RAM was overclocked to just 1300 MHz though.

Intel’s insane Core i7 980X was added to the party, also overclocked to 4.5 GHz. The result? An incredible P30542 Vantage score on just a single GPU! Elmor and Kinc hold the overall record set with two HD 5970’s in CF, at P51651. To reach 60% of that score on a single GPU (vs. four GPUs) gives you an idea as to how remarkable this achievement is.

So, there you have it. These Cypress dies have hefty overclocked potential, as we have seen previously, with the MSI Lightning getting close to 1.5 GHz. But the Asus has crossed it. Needless to say, Elmor and Kinc were given a cherry picked product, but there’s no denying the overclocking potential of these Cypress GPUs.
