ASUS SBW-06C1S-U Blu-ray Writer Review

The SBW-06C1S-U comes packaged in a simple blue box. This external Blu-ray writer is a winner of the iF product design award 2010. The award has been recognized as a label for good design since 1953.

Unpacking the box reveals the unit itself, along with a stylish stand for if you fancy having the drive propped up vertically.

With the included USB Y-cable, the ASUS burner drops the requirement of a bulky AC adapter, and can be powered directly via two USB ports. A disc containing the bundled software, as well as a simple manual are also included.

As an added bonus, ASUS has also packed in Cyberlink’s PowerDVD9 with Magic Cinema and a simple 3D glasses.

The Magic Cinema Technology in PowerDVD9 is said to allow 3D movie playback, with
the capability of DVD conversion from 2D to 3D. The software also features High Definition video upscaling and High Definition audio.

It’s black, it’s sleek, and it’s elegant. The piano black finish of the drive makes it a real beauty; it was like love at first sight.

The translucent lines (in the shape of an ‘X’) glow blue when the drive is operational.

There are four rubber feet on the base of the drive to let the drive sit firmly on a surface, and also prevent the bottom of the unit from being scratched.

The only minus point with a glossy exterior, is the drive becoming a fingerprint magnet. This is evident not only on the ASUS, but on other computer peripherals that have a gloss finish.

There are two lenses in the head unit, one for CDs and DVDs and the other for Blu-ray.
