ATi Catalyst 9.4 vs Catalyst 9.5 (8 Benchmarks)

Catalyst 9.5 was available for download from various sites even though it is still not available on ATI website. We managed to get the Catalyst 9.5 installed sucessfully and we ran a few benchmarks hoping for some surprises. A total of eight benchmarks were used. We decided to test using a range of resolutions, vary AA settings in order not to miss anything.

Catalyst 9.5 was available for download from various sites even though it is still not available on ATI website. We managed to get the Catalyst 9.5 installed sucessfully and we ran a few benchmarks hoping for some surprises. A total of eight benchmarks were used in our test.

  1. 3DMark Vantage
  2. Crysis Warhead
  3. Far Cry 2
  4. Mirror’s Edge
  5. Left 4 Dead
  6. Fallout 3
  7. Deadspace
  8. Call of Duty: World at War

We tested Fallout 3 and Deadspace by using a manual walkthrough in the game itself and recorded average FPS using FRAPS. COD5 was benched in game too but FPS were recorded during a fire fight instead of a standardised walkthrough. Benchmarks were ran with a stock Core i7 965 processor, Foxconn Blood Rage, 3 x 2GB Adata rams and ATI 4890 1GB.

Generally, we see a slight increase in FPS among the benchmarks. Although the increase is not as much as we hoped for, it is still heartening to see that something was done to increase performance of the ATI cards. There is an anomaly however in benching COD5. FPS were actually lower when Catalyst 9.5 was used particularly when AA was enabled. This could be due to the nature of the test which could have introduced much more random errors than other benchmarks. That being said, we can conclude that Catalyst 9.5 does improves the performance of the cards.
