On January 1, 2013 Australians that have been deprived of ESRB mature-rated games will be able to legally obtain them over the counter.  The Australian House and Senate have passed a bill that created an R18+ tag for video games.

In the past, video games that exceeded an MA15+ tag meant that they could not be sold in Australia.  Titles such as Mortal Kombat, Syndicate, and Grand Theft Auto were either banned or had to be edited to conform to Australian laws.

For a long time, various groups and lobbyists have been trying to persuade the government to approve legislations allowing higher ESRB rated games Australia, and the fruit of their work has come to be.  Starting next year, Aussies can perform fatality moves in Mortal Kombat—and do so legally.
