DICE, the developer behind popular first-person shooter franchise Battlefield, has confirmed that the next game in the series will not feature any motion control gameplay, disappointing some fans while allaying the fears of many others.

“We are not interested in things that don’t make the game better,” Patrick Bach, executive producer of Battlefield 4, told Edge. “There are a lot of gimmicks – people throwing money at us – ‘can you implement support for this quirky control thing?’ No, it doesn’t make the game better.”

Bach said DICE is “extremely open to innovation,” but he heavily criticised gimmicks, which he said do not add value to the player. He dismissed touchscreens as a gimmick before the iPhone came out. He did not outright condemn motion control and perceptual gaming, but only welcomed it if it actually adds to the gameplay.

The comments suggest that the studio was approached with the idea of implementing support for Kinect or PlayStation Move, or perhaps even for Nintendo's Wii U. Clearly DICE is unwilling to budge from the tried-and-tested formula that has made the franchise successful so far.

Battlefield 4 was unveiled last month, with a release date in Autumn 2013. It will launch on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. It will also be made available on next-generation consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 (or whatever Microsoft ends up calling it.)
