Blackberry does a 180, sidetracks from the original plan to update Playbook tablets to the new BB10 platform.
Despite promises made back in January, Blackberry has sidetracked from their original plan of updating their Playbook tablets with the company’s new Blackberry 10 OS. CEO Heins revealed that while multiple teams were hard at work developing for the tablet, he himself intervened and cancelled the project. This is what Thorsten Heins, CEO of Blackberry had to say:
“Unfortunately, I am not satisfied with the level of performance and user experience”
“We will, however, support PlayBook on the existing software platforms and configurations.”
Sorry folks… Ain’t happening.
With the company’s earnings still in red, it seems like a good decision to stop fund-sapping support for older devices. Ouch… This is going to hurt many devotees who were sticking to their Playbooks in the anticipation of an update. Blackberry posted a loss of $84 million for Q1 2013, selling a 100,000 Playbooks in that span of time (out of 6.8 million devices).
