Blizzard has promised that there will be several more expansions for its popular massively multiplayer online (MMO) game, World of Warcraft, after the release of its upcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion.

Despite moving developer talent away from its flagship title to its secretive Project Titan MMO, Blizzard still has big plans for World of Warcraft in the years to come.

Blizzard's COO Paul Sams said that the company is already in the early stages of development of its fifth expansion, the successor to the as yet unreleased Mists of Pandaria. This stage is mostly about developing the ideas and lore that shape the landscape, classes, and other aspects that end up in an expansion, but Blizzard is keen to point out that it is working on new stuff for its aging MMO.

In fact, Blizzard is planning so far ahead that it has also been pitching ideas for its sixth expansion, which will likely be several years away. Sams said he is “pretty geeked up” about the plans he's seen.

Blizzard recently admitted that BioWare's MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic, was partially to blame for its falling subscriber numbers in World of Warcraft. It is hoping that its panda expansion brings many players back, but teasing about future expansions is likely also intended to keep existing gamers who might be fearful about the future of the title.
