Blizzard is testing Diablo III on consoles in what it said could eventually turn into an “official project,” a major shift from its usual PC-only approach.

The company first suggested a possible console port of the game in March, but there appeared to be no development of that idea since. Now it has been revealed that the studio already has console builds running internally, suggesting it might only be a matter of time before Diablo III is available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or Wii U.

“We're still kind of exploring it,” Rob Pardo, chief creative officer at Blizzard, told Polygon. “We've got builds up and running on it. We're hoping to get it far enough along where we can make it an official project, but we're not quite ready to release stuff about it, but it's looking pretty cool.”

Diablo III launched in May and became one of the fastest-selling games of all time. Despite some criticism of its online-only functionality, it received widely positive reviews, as did many of its subsequent updates.

Lead writer at Blizzard, Jay Wilson, said that the company is working on “the next big Diablo thing,” which is likely to be the rumoured expansion for Diablo III that was confirmed to be on the table by the company's CEO, Mike Morhaime. He said there is no timeframe for release, however, which means players could be waiting for this, and a console port of the game, for quite a long time.
