Blizzard has announced that Diablo 3 will feature “global play,” letting players in any region around the world play on any server they want.

The much-anticipated hack-and-slash role-playing game will have servers divided into three regions, the Americas (which includes Australia and New Zealand), Europe and Asia. However, players will not be forced to play on servers within their region.

This is a step in the right direction for allowing players maximum freedom, but it is not without its flaws, as players will have to create new characters in each region, rather than being allowed to import their existing character from one region to another. This is likely due to technical limitations, but should still be explored in future for a truly region-free experience.

Real-money auctions will also be restricted by region. This is not entirely surprising, as there are likely legal restrictions and complications that would apply for cross-region auctioning involving real cash.

Another difficulty, though not necessarily a restriction, is that players will need to recreate their friends lists and items from scratch, in addition to their characters, so it is effectively like re-rolling to experience something new.

For those with friends halfway across the world, however, it still opens up the gameplay considerably and could help players who like to play at off-peak times in one region find players at peak times elsewhere.

Diablo III launches on 15 May.
