It’s called the “Booster Brolly”, and it’s one of the many devices that probably won’t make it mainstream, but it will turn some heads if someone actually uses it in public.

The Booster Brolly is an umbrella with flexible solar panels attached to the canopy.  The current from the solar panels are transferred via electrical components down the carbon fiber skeleton of the umbrella, and phones are charged via a USB port near the bottom of the umbrella’s handle. The developers claim that a phone can be charged in under three hours when the weather is permitting.

“The custom canopy has been fitted with 12 lightweight amorphous silicon triple junction solar cells that have the ability to convert light into electricity, through a series of highly sensitive photovoltaic semiconductors,” says Dr. Kenneth Tong, a UCL professor.  “The current generated is then transferred, via a voltage regulator, to the handle of the umbrella where it is stored safely in high capacity rechargeable batteries, or used to directly charge a mobile device through a USB port.”

More than a novelty, the Booster Brolly may be a solution to Earth’s dying need for clean energy.  Save the planet, one cellphone charge at a time.  But, it just doesn’t look fashionable enough for the masses.
