Finally, Bose Releases Water-Resistant Portable Speaker

The new Bose SoundLink Color II Portable Speaker.

Bose is known for making great sounding portable speakers, but never a water resistant one. That has changed with the new Bose SoundLink Color Series II Portable Speaker. This brings a much needed refresh to the original, released in 2014.

Touted to be Bose’ very first water-resistant portable, it is rated IPX4 splash-proof. This means that it withstands splashes but you cannot throw it into the pool. (Unlike the popular UE Boom 2 or JBL Flip 3, which features IPX7 full waterproofing)

The new speaker features improved build-quality (being wrapped in silicon), which seems to add better ruggedness and grip than the first version’s plastic shell. The speaker is juiced with a micro-USB cable and features a 3.5mm AUX input.

New internal Dual Opposing Passive Radiators will add more oomph to your music, something that the previous version lacked! A microphone allows you to take calls and also activate Siri or Google Now.

SoundLink Color II also works with the Bose Connect App, letting you manage connected devices, and customise the speaker’s name. Like the previous version, it still has a voice prompt which is very helpful. It takes you through the pairing process and informs you which devices are currently connected.

The speaker lacks some improvements which I have yet to see. The current 8 hour battery life is still very basic and falls behind the popular UE Roll 2’s 20-hour battery. (Although that simply means you’ll have to charge it more often) It also cannot pair with a similar SoundLink to play in stereo mode, a feature that has become quite common in portables.

I can’t wait to audition the Bose SoundLink Color II as soon as its available in Singapore! It’s now launched in the US for US$129.95.

Sold in Aquatic Blue, Coral Red, Polar White or Soft Black.
