Buffalo Technology started shipping the MiniStation Thunderbolt + USB 3.0 dual-interface portable hard drive. The drive was unveiled by Buffalo Japan a little earlier this month, before the Austin, Texas-based firm released it worldwide. The drive lets you use 10 Gb/s Thunderbolt, 5 Gb/s USB 3.0, and even the 480 Mb/s USB 2.0 interfaces.

The MiniStation Thunderbolt + USB 3.0 portable hard drive from Buffalo comes in two variants based on capacity: 500 GB (HD-PA500TU3) and 1 TB (HD-PA1.0TU3). Its combination of Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 interfaces lets users of both the latest Mac and PC ecosystems run the drives with zero interface bottlenecks. The drive draws power from whichever interface cable is connected. One of its sides has a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed micro-B connector and a Thunderbolt port. Since there's just one of these, users should ensure the drive stays at the end of their Thunderbolt daisy-chain, if they plan to use other devices in tandem, sharing the same port from the host machine. The drive is backwards-compatible with USB 2.0 HiSpeed interface.

The MiniStation Thunderbolt + USB 3.0 is housed in an aluminum body, with a translucent frosted top. It connects to Macs and PCs without needing any additional drivers. When connected to Macs, users can take advantage of Time Machine  for backing up their data. Backed by a 3-year warranty, the 500 GB and 1 TB MiniStation Thunderbolt + USB 3.0 portable hard drive variants are priced at US $199.99 and US $299.99, respectively.
