Call of Duty: Ghosts launched yesterday across multiple platforms and has since garnered over $1 billion in total worldwide sales, Activision reported earlier today. Millions of gamers across the globe are taking part within the game’s multi-faceted multiplayer modes, and according to Microsoft the game’s popular online multiplayer has risen to become the current number one most-played game on Xbox Live.

Additionally Activision reveals that Ghosts has gained more average playing sessions on Xbox 360 than either Black Ops II or Modern Warfare 3 within each title’s respective launch periods.

Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, had the following to say about Ghosts‘ recent surge of success:

“Call of Duty is by far the largest console franchise of this generation,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “More people have played Call of Duty this year than ever before, logging four billion hours of gameplay.

“And in the last 12 months, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, including its digital content, generated more revenues than any other console game ever has in a single year.

“Although it is too early to assess sell-through for Call of Duty: Ghosts, it’s launching at a time when the franchise has never been more popular.”

While multiple reviews have indicated that the new chapter of the Call of Duty franchise doesn’t revolutionize the series as a whole, it remains a solid contender for this year’s next-gen lineup and will no-doubt hold its ground against its long-time rival Battlefield 4 come later this month.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is now available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U and PC. PS4 and Xbox One versions will be released at each of the console’s respective launches on Nov. 15 and Nov. 22.
