Ex IGN editor Jeremy Conrad has reported that Call of Duty: Ghosts on Xbox One has inconsistent frame rate drops and laments that gamers should avoid buying the game.
With next-gen consoles right around the corner, the Xbox One vs. PS4 war wages on with gamers looking closely at resolution and frame rates of various titles across both platforms.
The recent news of Call of Duty: Ghosts running at a native 1080p on PS4 and 720p on the Xbox One kicked off a fresh storm that culminated in what’s now being coined as “resolutiongate”. The gaming community–like many others–feel that the Xbox One, being the more expensive console, should be able to support native 1080p resolutions for its gaming library.
Call of Duty: Ghosts serves as the example that led to the graphical disparities between the consoles, and gamers feel that this could have some rather troubling implications farther down the line. One commenter in a gaming forum voices his concerns on the matter:
“What happens when the PS4 has a game so big it has to be forced down to 720p at 30fps? What happens to the Xbox One version?”

Microsoft has affirmed that gamers won’t really notice the difference between the two consoles, as the Xbox One will upscale Ghosts to 1080p. Despite this many are dubious and these key factors remain selling points for a fair share of consumers.
The resolutiongate debacle grew into an even greater tumult when major gaming sites–like Joystiq–revealed that the PS4 version of Ghosts suffered from noticeable frame rate drops.
The site further detailed that the current-gen versions of Ghosts maintained the “rock-solid 60fps” rates, whereas the PS4 version had “noticeable technical issues, sometimes slowing to a crawl, particularly during set-piece moments with multiple effects”.
Now an ex IGN editor reports that the Xbox One version is plagued by the same frame rate drops, which is disappointing considering the game is already running at a lower resolution of 720p.

The trade-off with higher resolutions is that they usually involve lower frame rates, yet many gamers–and even Adam Sessler–believe that next-gen consoles should deliver games at a standard of 1080p @ 60fps.
This ratio should mean that Ghosts on Xbox One, running at 720p, should retain a more solid frame rate due to its lower resolution, but if Conrad’s reports are accurate that isn’t the case.
It will be interesting to see what Joystiq and other sites have to say about the Xbox One versions of Ghosts when the NDA lifts on Nov. 12, and what conclusions are gleaned by side-by-side comparisons of the game in action.
While the argument may seem trite and trivial to a few, the concept is often simplified to compare a console that costs a hundred dollars more that supports half the pixels than its cheaper counterpart. The lack of native full-HD support can be a deal breaker for many, and it remains one of the stronger comparison points between the two consoles.
The Xbox One does have its own merits, including its array of multi-media features like in-game and TV DVR functionality as well as DLNA media streaming and its interactive Kinect sensor.
However many are keeping a close eye on the console’s graphical limitations–which have been revealed by launch titles like Ryse: Son of Rome (900p resolution upscaled to full HD) and Call of Duty: Ghosts (at 720p resolution upscaled as well).
