Don’t expect leaps and bounds when it comes to the next gen tech of the Xbox 720 and Sony PS4, well, at least according to John Carmack.

Many current PS3 and 720 titles are not rendered in full HD (1080P) at 60 FPS–most titles currently renders in 720P at 30 FPS.   However, Carmack expects that the future consoles can render most, if not all, games in 1080P at 60 FPS.  Aside from increased rendering and FPS power, Carmack doesn’t see anything else revolutionary about Sony’s or Microsoft’s next console.

“Any creative vision that a designer could come up with, we can do a pretty good job representing on current generation and certainly on PC. In many ways I am not all that excited about the next generation. It will let us do everything we want to do now, with the knobs turned up. If you take a current game like Halo which is a 30 hertz game at 720p; if you run that at 1080p, 60 frames with high dynamic frame buffers, all of a sudden you've sucked up all the power you have in the next-generation. It will be what we already have, but a lot better.”

Carmack emphasizes that virtual reality (VR) should be the next step in next generation gaming.  Not surprisingly, Carmack also points to the VR headset that he’s working on as an example of the next gen gaming experience.

However, Carmack does not deny the fact that Sony, along with other console giants, may look into VR as something they can work upon to deliver more than just life-like renderings on the screen.

“As a fully consumer thing, it is hard to imagine [the VR headset] happening in less than a year. Sony is already interested in this thing, and they are interested in seeing how they want to follow this up. I can easily imagine something like that. Sony conceivably could have a product out in the next year. I have no inkling on internal plans, but as a company I think they can do it.”

Furthermore, consumers of Xbox 360 expect that the 720 will deliver even more robust gaming experience from Kinect and other augmented reality devices.

There’s no doubt that every major gaming console makers are working on some sort of “next gen” gaming experience.  But who would have thought that the Nintendo Wii would have made such a big splash with its low end hardware at launch?
