At the CES 2011, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer gave a keynote speech and said that power efficient chips incorporated in smartphones, tablets and laptops were the way to go. Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chips, running on Dual-Core ARM Cortex-A9 CPUs each clocked at 1Ghz, were chosen to run early prototypes of Windows. Microsoft Windows which is compatible only with x86 and 64-bit processors, had to be tweaked for ARM’s architecture.
Microsoft ended 2010 with the launch of Windows 7 phones and Kinect motion sensor for its Xbox 360. From Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer keynote, it was clear that power efficient chips incorporated in smartphones, tablets and laptops were the way to go. Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chips, running on Dual-Core ARM Cortex-A9 CPUs each clocked at 1Ghz were chosen to run early prototypes of Windows. Microsoft Windows compatible only with x86 and 64-bit processors, had to be tweaked for ARM’s architecture.
Michael Angiulo, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for Windows planning, hardware and PC ecosystem, and Baller demonstrated programs such as Powerpoint, Internet Explorer 9 (Beta), HTML5 rendering and Nvidia’s Visual Computing on the prototype system that is powered by the Tegra 2 processor and running Microsoft Windows operating system. Hardware-accelerated programs like Microsoft Office and web browsing also run seamlessly. The highlight of the demonstration was a Full 1080P video being played on the system with no noticeable lag. Tegra 2 chips also supports 1080p signal output for Full HD viewing.
With Android 3.0 for tablets on the horizon, Microsoft Window needs to find a skimmed down version of Windows 7 and an improved version of Windows Phone 7 customized for tablets running ARM processor to gain a foothold in this lucrative tablet market. The sneak peek at the prototype machine would mean a Windows-powered by Tegra 2 tablets coming out in the near future.
