COMPUTEX: Nvidia Geforce GTX 460 Specs/Release leaked

Bit-tech have revealed details about GF104, to be branded GTX 460. Rumoured to be everything between a crippled GF100, Fermi 2, to GF100 derivative, it seems that GTX 460 is going to be based on GF104, a derivative part. At first glance, the GTX 460 seems like GTX 480 in half. Half the shaders - 240; Half the memory interface - 192-bit. Sadly, the TDP is not half, and is rumoured to be an extremely hot 180W. Judging by the specifications, the GTX 460 seems likely to be somewhere between the HD 5770 and the HD 5830. More details...

Rumoured to be everything between a crippled GF100, Fermi 2, to GF100
derivative, it seems that GTX 460 is going to be based on GF104, a
derivative part. At first glance, the GTX 460 seems like GTX 480 in
half. Half the shaders - 240; Half the memory interface - 192-bit.
Sadly, the TDP is not half, and is rumoured to be an extremely hot 180W.
Judging by the specifications, the GTX 460 seems likely to be somewhere
between the HD 5770 and the HD 5830.
The size will be similar to the HD 5770 - 8.5in. The HD 5770 is a much less power hungry product of course, and the Juniper die will be tiny compared to GF104. The 180W TDP might suggest a high clock speed on the GF104. The nomenclature - GTX 460 rather than GTS 460 - also suggests that it will likely end up closer to the GTX 480 than one might expect from a quick glance at the specs.
There's a slight anomaly in the specs as well. The Fermi generation SMs are of 32SP each. Thus, 8 SMs gives 256 SP, whereas 7 gives 224 SP. Thus, the 240 SP rumour sounds incomplete. Of course, it is possible that GF104 is indeed a little more than a GF100 cut down, with one of the revisions being each SM being 16 SPs, much like GT200. The benefit could be a greater flexibility in releasing yield binned products - something that is a big part of GF100. It is likely it is an erroneous rumour, with 256 SP being the actual count.
However, rumours of the GTX 460 being "overclockable to GTX 480 performance" seems very shady, at best.
The GTX 460 is set to release earlier than expected - early-mid-July, but Nvidia release dates seem to be rather flexible.
GF104 brings much needed competition to the mainstream segment that is currently being dominated by the HD 5700 series. However, like all Fermi products, there's a sense of "too little, too hot, too late". Still, we would expect the GTX 460 to be a decent performer and most of all, a competitor, assuming Nvidia prices it right (unlike the GTX 465).
