Core i5 650 overclocked to 4.7 GHz, on air!

The base model of Intel's upcoming Core i5 600 series based on Clarkdale, the Core i5 650, clocked at 3.2 Ghz and priced at $176, has been overclocked to a dizzying 4.7 GHz on air. The test was done on a Gigabyte P55 motherboard, cooled by Noctua NH-U12P in tandem with Coolink 120mm fan. The final result stood at 4.70 GHz (25x188). It is worth noting that the CPU overclocked was an engineering sample which had an unlocked multiplier. The actual multiplier is 24 - but even this would return 4.5 GHz, not a shabby result by any means. More next page.

Of course, this is not the first time we have seen such overclocking results - there have been numerous tests which have put Clarkdale engineering samples well over 4 Ghz. It is clear that the final retail version will be an overclocking champion. The Clarkdale Core i5/i3 CPUs will of course release on January 3rd, so we are little over two months away.

The Core i5 650 takes on the AMD Phenom II 955 at ~$175, going by the latest round of price cuts, though we can expect the Phenom II 965 to drop to $175 by the time the Core i5 650 releases. That does make for an interesting battle - 2 cores, 4 threads of the more efficient Clarkdale versus 4 native cores of the Phenom II 965.
