Corning, Inc., announced recently that they will be launching their EAGLE XG LCD glass which is manufactured without the heavy metals used in previous LCD glass products. The new glass will rid the production process of harmful waste and also to cut manufacturing costs and, in turn, reduce prices.

Corning, Inc., announced recently that they will be launching their EAGLE XG LCD glass which is manufactured without the heavy metals used in previous LCD glass products. The new glass will rid the production process of harmful waste and also to cut manufacturing costs and, in turn, reduce prices.

Corning has been involved in the LCD industry since the mid-1980’s, producing the first LCD glass substrates used by Japanese LCD development labs and continuing its contributions of advancements in the LCD glass industry including the EAGLE2000 introduced in 2000 substrate which had “very-low glass density, higher chemical durability, and advanced thermal properties”. The EAGLE XG substrate is an improvement on the EAGLE2000 product with the addition of a safer combination of materials.

Corning also has its hands very wet in optical fiber and copper cabling products, as well as products for other applications such as ophthalmic eyeglass lenses and semicondustor optics aside from their LCD substrate business.

LCD’s have taken up the bulk of all PC display sales recently and have also made a strong entrance into family rooms with televisions based on LCD technology. Corning supplies the majority of the world with glass for LCD substrates — in particular LG.Philips LCD and Samsung LCD are major buyers of Corning glass. Cheaper substrates will almost certainly result in cheaper LCD panels for everyone, though it is unclear just how much this new material will affect the retail market.
