Creative has just launched the MuVo² FM 5GB player powered by Seagate’s new 1-inch ST1 5GB, 3600rpm hard drive with RunOn Technology. Of course, we are very interested to know if this drive can be used in digicams like what the Hitachi 4GB Microdrive has been able to achieve therefore we take it apart and test it out.
Creative has just launched the MuVo² FM 5GB mini portable audio
player on September 2nd in Singapore and it sports features such as built-in FM
Tuner/Recorder, Voice Recording, and a newly-designed Navigation Stick. It comes
with an estimated street price of S$ 449 (~US$ 260). The most interesting aspect
of this player is definitely the huge data storage powered by Seagate’s new
1-inch ST1 5GB, 3600rpm hard drive with RunOn Technology which improves the
drive’s performance in high-motion environments.
We are very interested to know if the new Seagate ST1 5GB hard
drive can be used in other products like Digital cameras, PDAs etc. like what
the Hitachi 4GB Microdrive in the previous Creative MuVo² 4GB has been able to
achieve although the later batches are made already incompatible. The Creative
and Seagate senior executives have mentioned during the press launch that the
ST1 drives in the MuVo² FM 5GB won’t be compatible with other devices and the
ST1 drives for all other devices will be available during Q4. Certainly we would
like to test it out ourselves to verify this and therefore we bought this player
off the shelves and took it apart.
