Is it just us or are we seeing nearly a new SSD for hard drive caching on a daily basis now? Is it just us or are we seeing nearly a new SSD for hard drive caching on a daily basis now? Well, no matter, Crucial has announced its entry into the SSD caching business with a new drive that the company calls the Adrenaline which in essence is a Crucial m4 SSD, a bracket and some caching software, of which the latter makes this an interesting offer.

Unlike most companies, Crucial hasn't relied on Intel's Smart Response technology to handle the caching, instead Crucial is providing what we presume is sourced software from a third party, although the press release doesn't go into any details with regards to the software itself beyond the fact that it'll allow for hard drive caching to take place. Apparently the software is fully automated, runs in the background and doesn't require any user interaction once installed.

As for the SSD itself, it's a 50GB Crucial m4 SSD with an Adrenaline sticker as per the picture, but again we don't have any specifics in terms of performance, but we'd expect it to have lower performance than the 64GB m4 drive. This means sequential read speeds of around 500MB/s and write speeds of presumably less than 95MB/s. However, in a caching setup the IOPS are more important and the Crucial m4 drives do quite well here with the 64GB model managing around 45K IOPS in 4KB random reads and 20K IOPS in 4KB random writes and again we should see similar if slightly lower performance out of the Adrenaline drive.

No word on pricing as yet, but it should hopefully end up under US$100, especially as Crucial's 64GB m4 model is priced at US$112. The Adrenaline drive is said to launch sometime later this quarter and it'll come with a three year warranty.
