Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider re-boot sells over 4 million copies worldwide
Crystal Dynamic’s re-imagining of the PC classic did more than just re-invent one of the most iconic heroines in video game history. With Tomb Raider (2o13), the dev team masterfully created a dazzling adventure that focused on the internal and environmental strife that Lara Croft faced in an effort to survive, chronicling her journey from a famous explorer into a tough-as-nails heroine.
Her plight was captured within the game itself, punctuated with fraught and danger along the way. Players were taken on a timeless trek that combined all of the derring-do of Indiana Jones with the improvisational deadliness of Bear Grylls to show what happens when a person is pushed to their limit–and sometimes farther.
With the amazing spectacle that is Tomb Raider‘s story arc and intuitive third-person action mechanics, it’s no wonder that the game was received with honors and acclaim across the gaming sphere, receiving almost universal praise.
To compliment the high review scores, Square Enix has revealed that the game itself has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide since it’s launch in February of this year, and the number is rising everyday.
Additionally the game has become the fastest-selling title in the history of the franchise, and for good reason.
Despite this impressive milestone, Tomb Raider didn’t meet the sales predictions set forth by Square Enix. Due to the success of the original release, Crystal Dynamics is currently in development on a Tomb Raider sequel for next-gen consoles.
It will be interesting to see how the developers can push the bar even further in the sequel, and what new dangerous and compromising positions they can envision for Lara this time around.
