The UK branch of Crytek, which was known as Free Radical before Crytek bought it, has dismissed rumours of a fourth instalment of its popular TimeSplitters series.

Rumours of the game surfaced in recent weeks after reports that the studio had restarted development, which appeared to be cancelled in 2007. The rumoured release was expected to launch on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 consoles, which are not expected until the end of next year.

Crytek UK denied this was true, saying “it's not in development,” news that will disappoint fans of the first-person shooter series, the last instalment of which, TimesSplitters: Future Perfect, launched in 2005.

It may be that, since Crytek took over, the UK studio has been forced to work on titles like Crysis 3, expected to release in Spring 2013. This is upsetting news for fans, but possibly less than the developer's call for used game bans on next-generation consoles.

The next TimeSplitters game might not be in the works, but the company quipped that it “spent all of the development budget on buying monkeys,” suggesting it might be working on a real-life version of the game in its Nottingham office.
